Care and operation of steel door
Finishing
The Gienow steel exterior entrance door has s high quality coil-coated primer coat. Before painting the door, please read these instructions thoroughly. The coating provided on your Gienow Entrance Door can be top coated with any high quality exterior paint.
Surface Preparation
The steel door already has a factory applied primer. Further prime painting is not recommended
Lightly scuff the surface of the door with a scouring pad or very fine sandpaper (320 grit)
Wipe the door and jamb surfaces clean of any dust, dirt or debris with water and a detergent solution.
Note: if your door is exposed to extreme direct sun do not paint your door dark colours and/or install a non-ventilated storm door. In extreme direct sun excessive heat will build up on the door surface. This heat build up can result in distortion of the door surfaces. Gienow will not warranty under these conditions
Apply a coat of high quality exterior Latex Paint to your door.
The complete door surface (exterior, interior and all four edges), window trim and jamb must be painted.
When to PaintNew door, window trim, decorative trim and jamb must be painted within 30 days of installation. Most doors needs repainting every 3-5 years. Darker colours may need refinishing more frequently than lighter colours. Prepare the surface of a previously painted door in the same fashion as in the "Painting Wood…" section.
Minor Repair
To repair scratches and dents:
Sand the damaged area, ensuring all paint is removed
Apply a fiberglass metal bonding filler according to the manufacturer's instructions
Hand sand the repaired area with 60 grit sandpaper
Repaint
AdjustmentsThe threshold is adjustable, and may be moved up or down to obtain a proper seal between itself and the door. The adjusting screws are located on the top of the threshold. If the threshold is too high, it can be lowered by turning the screws CLOCKWISE. If the threshold is too low, turn these screws COUNTER-CLOCKWISE. For striker adjustments -see Thermal Bow Occurrences.
Storm Door
Installation of a storm door with an entry door that has plastic or decorative or window trim will cause excessive heat build up and damage to the trims, especially for the South/West exposure. To prevent heat build up, leave vent open to allow heat to escape.
