In 1947, Gienow began a tradition of providing high-quality, beautiful windows and doors for Calgary home builders. That tradition continues today.

Bernard “Tiny” Gienow, a Calgary builder, needed quality windows for the homes he was building.
So, he built his own company, Gienow Sash and Door Co. Ltd, and ran it from his home in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. By 1955, Gienow was a household name.

In 1972, Gienow’s company became a division of Redpath Industries Ltd. and was renamed Gienow Ltd. By the mid-1970s, the manufacturing facility’s plant and office space had swelled to 76,000 square feet. Gienow began assembling wood casement windows in 1980.

In 1983, a group of Calgary businessmen purchased Gienow Ltd., renaming it Gienow Building Products Ltd. Gienow became the industry leader in on-time performance and by 1989 was reaching a dozen countries, including the U.S., Japan, China, Russia, Chile and South Korea.

Throughout the 1990s, Gienow expanded and diversified its product line. New and innovative technologies, like a state-of-the-art wood molder and unique vertical dryer were installed in 1992. By 1993, the company was manufacturing vinyl windows and industrial windows and doors.

In 1995, Gienow became the first Canadian company to incorporate InterceptTM insulating glass technology on sealed units. By September 17, 1998, Gienow had manufactured one million InterceptTM sealed units and was manufacturing steel doors.

Gienow Building Products moved into its current 350,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility in 1999 and acquired a subsidiary, Award Windows of Edmonton.

In 2001, Architectural Windows and Doors, Ltd., a second Gienow subsidiary, specialized in aluminum and high-rise window manufacturing.

The current management team of Gienow celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2003. Eighteen of the 37 original employees from are still employed by Gienow, and the total number of employees now exceeds 800.
